Elon Musk's path to becoming one of the world's top entrepreneurs is based on his drive for innovation and big ideas. Musk started with early successes, such as selling his first company, Zip2, and co-founding PayPal, which was later sold to eBay. In 2004, he joined Tesla Motors (now Tesla, Inc.) as an investor and leader, helping to change the car industry with electric vehicles.

At the same time, his company, SpaceX, made several advancements in space exploration, such as creating rockets that can be reused. Musk has also started other companies, like Neuralink and The Boring Company, to explore new technology for a better future.

Known for his strong leadership and outspoken personality, Musk is often related to famous innovators like Henry Ford and Steve Jobs, and his daring ideas have made him one of the most influential figures of our time.

A Look at the Companies Elon Musk Has Sustained:

In 2004, Musk invested $6.35 million in the fledgling company in a series A funding round, becoming the company's largest shareholder.

Later, Musk took over an important role in the company as CEO in 2008.  As Musk and Tesla continue to innovate, the EV maker's stock has surged over 700% in 2020 alone and has a market capitalization of nearly $1 trillion at the time of writing.

Tesla's significant milestones:

  • 2015: Tesla expanded its lineup with the Model X, a luxury SUV, establishing its presence in the electric vehicle market.
  • 2017: The company unveiled the Model 3, a more affordable electric sedan aimed at the mass market, which became the first electric car to sell over one million units globally by June 2021.
  • 2020: Tesla introduced the Model Y crossover, which became the best-selling vehicle worldwide by December 2023.
  • 2021: Tesla achieved a market capitalization of $1 trillion, becoming the sixth U.S. company to reach this valuation.

2. SolarCity

In 2006, Musk helped start the solar energy firm SolarCity with a production facility in Buffalo, New York.  Musk provided significant financial backing and served as chairman, guiding the company's strategic direction.

In 2016, Musk encountered legal issues when Tesla bought SolarCity for over $2 billion. Some shareholders alleged in court that he influenced Tesla's board to approve the deal, unfairly favoring his family members.

The Tesla and SolarCity merger combined electric cars, batteries, and solar energy to create a clean energy company. Musk saw Tesla Energy as a way to offer sustainable solutions like the Solar Roof and Powerwall, making renewable energy more efficient and attractive.

Despite challenges like delays and restructuring, Musk stayed committed to moving away from fossil fuels. His vision focused on creating a reliable and affordable energy system powered by solar and batteries, creating a cleaner future.

On April 27, 2022, Vice Chancellor Joseph R. Slights ruled in favor of Musk in the Delaware Court of Chancery.

3. Neuralink

Aiming to treat severe brain disease, Musk co-founded the neurological research company, Neuralink in 2016.

Neuralink's First Human Trials:

On January 28, 2024, Neuralink marked a significant milestone by implanting its first device into a human patient, 29-year-old Noland Arbaugh. Following the procedure, Arbaugh successfully used the implant to control his laptop from the bed, demonstrating the potential of brain-computer interface technology. Although some threads from the implant initially retracted from his brain, they later stabilized, allowing consistent use.

Later in the year, Neuralink achieved further progress with a second patient, Alex, who received the implant without experiencing any issues with thread retraction. Alex successfully used the device to play the video game Counter-Strike 2, controlling both a mouse and keyboard simultaneously, showcasing the improved functionality and precision of the implant in real-world applications.

4. SpaceX

SpaceX founded in 2002, the primary appeal of SpaceX is its affordability compared to other traditional rocket technology. Elon Musk’s idea for SpaceX is the goal of reducing space transportation costs to enable the colonization of Mars.

Under his leadership, SpaceX has achieved several significant milestones:

  • 2008: SpaceX's Falcon 1 became the first privately developed liquid-fueled rocket to reach orbit.
  • 2010: The company launched the Falcon 9 rocket, designed for greater payload capacity and reusability.
  • 2012: SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft became the first commercial vehicle to dock with the International Space Station (ISS).
  • 2015: The Falcon 9's first stage successfully landed vertically after a mission, marking a breakthrough in reusable rocket technology.
  • 2020: SpaceX launched its first crewed mission, Demo-2, sending astronauts to the ISS aboard the Crew Dragon spacecraft.

Darüber hinaus ist das Unternehmen mit einem Wert von über 100 Milliarden Dollar das zweitgrößte private Unternehmen der Welt.

5. The Boring Company

Der in Texas ansässige Musk ist auch der Gründer von The Boring Company, einem 2016 gegründeten Startup für den Bau von Tunneln.

With its projects primarily designed for intra-city transit systems, the company plans to solve traffic challenges and enable point-to-point transportation.

  • 2018: Completed the Hawthorne test tunnel in California, a 1.14-mile passage designed to evaluate tunneling techniques and Loop-based transportation systems.
  • 2021: Launched the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) Loop, a 1.7-mile underground transportation system utilizing Tesla vehicles to transport passengers across the convention center campus.
  • April 2024: Expanded the (LVCC) Loop to include a segment reaching Resorts World Las Vegas, with additional tunnels to Encore and Westgate resorts nearing completion.

These developments underscore Musk's commitment to advancing urban transportation solutions through innovative tunneling technologies.

6. X (former Twitter)
